While I was doing a shoot in Bangkok. Christine Jeffs filmed the TV ads, who directed Sunshine Cleaning...which I loved...

I was looking for a short but intense directing/scriptwriting class. she recommended AFTRS Australian Film Television and Radio School.

I wrote, directed and edited my first short film down under.

The holidays are upon us, the cold nipping at our toes and nose and I dream of longboarding in Mexico shortly. In the meantime, I am editing my address book, sending out holiday cards, hastily billing before the close of 2011 and eating too much chocolate that came wrapped in bubble wrap and love.

I wish you all a holiday and new year this year filled with something very simple. FUN!

We all travel so much, time with family, long lines, internet crashes, and hazy mornings from laughter and red table wine from the winter wishes the previous night.

While I wish you all health and happiness, thats all fine and well. What I really wish everyone I know and love is...FUN! We only have now, to do what makes us laugh, tell someone we love them, smile from ear to ear.

Be in the moment and enjoy every second. Winter wishes and love to you all!

Family Ties: Anthology Magazine

hi. I heart Anthology Magazine.

Here are some off shoots from the article on Herriott Grace as it is one of my favorite shoots this past year. Find it in Issue No. 3. For those of you who haven’t read the article, I won’t spoil it, but I’ll just say that it’s wonderful to learn about a family business founded on the purity of raw materials and the capable hands of a skilled craftsman—the buttermilk cake recipe is a sweet little bonus, too.

I just adored Nikole Herriott and her father Lance at the Herriott’s farm on Vancouver Island.

yes, its true. again I have returned to singapore to spend time with my lovely friend sgp.

today, I indulged in a massage at the hip dempsey compound that encompasses "house" a spa, restaurant, bar and overall campy meets industrial style.

across the street is the singaporean version of dean and deluca called jones the grocer.

the two bag spree cost as much as a james perse tee but, it was all too yummy to pass up.

settling into coq au vin, which I adore and a glass of shiraz.

hoping I have room for the salted caramel gelato with marshmallow sauce.

delicious and happy.

Quick day trip to shoot editorial for British RED magazine on international chef Christie from Jin cafe in Venice.

Brian and I stopped at Huckleberry for breakfast on way to the shoot. LOved it, my new favorite go to place from now on!

Afternoon stop at Intelligentsia for iced americanos on Abbott Kinney, of course. Who does not want a personal Barista?

Finally made it to the Ace in Palm Springs this past weekend after a rainy shoot in LA. My friend Scott and I practiced doing nothing and rarely ever knew the time of day. It was delicious.

A quick trip to Joshua Tree, hello's to Michael from Flashdance and his beautiful daughter and wife, followed by sauvignon blanc at the Parker.

Three perfect days.

Secret Surf Spot

I can't share where I am. I have been all over Mexico and finally found a place for surfing. No bars pumping late night music, no theft, steps from the break with zero light pollution.

Back to back, reform waves, practically deserted beaches except for the small surf shop (I traded boards with the owner for the week, and we are both in heaven).

Sunrise and sunset surf sessions on perfect glassy longboard waves.

New Stop Motion Video!

Chronicle Books Stop Motion Video christmas card...

"This year, the Marketing Design group at Chronicle decided to do something different for our holiday card: a stop-motion video! We all love the style of stop-motion, and thought it would be the perfect medium to deliver our holiday message—See things differently this year!—since we could make things magically appear, disappear, and transform into other objects. We also wanted to represent the kinds of things we love at Chronicle, including crafts, cooking, music, and children’s books. None of us had ever made a stop-motion video, however, and when we did a few trial runs we realized how incredibly challenging it would be. For instance, we would need to take over 700 photos to make a 1-minute video, all with consistent lighting and perfect timing (the final number was 726)! Luckily for us, our colleague, Christina Loff, introduced us to the fabulous Thayer Gowdy, who agreed to shoot it for us. Thayer was amazing…a real pro. She helped us pull it all together into a cohesive story and taught us so much. It was a fantastic creative collaboration and we were all sad when it was over!

By the time we were shooting the video, people at Chronicle were buzzing about it and asking “Why wasn’t I asked to be in it???” and pushing each other aside to peek into the room where we were shooting. The last step was adding the music, which was composed by one of our Sr. Production Coordinators, Ben Kasman. We were so excited to finally show it to everyone that we had a public “viewing” before we e-mailed it out."

Thanks chronicle, it was a blast!

Recently made a new photo friend, Alan W George. He is a software guy by day and shooter every other hour. I can't wait to do a photo trade for a giant print for my wall. check him it.

A little about Alan, " Up until around 2003, photography was to me what it is for most people, a mechanism for recording life's "important" moments. Memory triggering devices that will later remind us of the relentless inevitability of time. I am not quite sure how but somewhere along the way, photography has become a central part of my life. Photography for me is a way of exploring the world. It's the process of searching, selecting and examining something that would otherwise go unnoticed. Through this process, I feel more conscious, more aware, more engaged, more alive. Plus, as Mr. Winogrand put it so succinctly , I just like to see what things look like as photographs."

A late afternoon shoot with Tyler on a ranch in Altadena, California—it changed my view on the L.A. area. I felt like I was in Santa Barbara: the valley oaks, the tall grasses, the warm light.

New Film! crafting a meaningful home

I am so excited to share my first film! That is not a stop motion...
This little film is a promotion piece on the book called Crafting a Meaningful Home.

Shot on location in San Francisco & New York City, all shot by me on the 5DMarkII.

Edited by the lovely Arvid Eriksson. Its is a pretty funny story. While researching editors I fell in love with the last movie Toast did in the Greek Islands and contacted the editor of the film. He lives in New Zealand! My business manager was leaving the next day on a trip to her hometown and lo and behold, Arvid lived in that same town she grew up in. Strange small world we live, Jenn was able to hand deliver it and say hello. I love working with people halfway across the world on projects via skype. Always keeps things interesting.

Here's some info on the book if you have not seen it in stores yet.

"Crafting a Meaningful Home goes beyond traditional DIY books to tell the family stories behind each person’s craft project. From braided rag vessels and rugs to flags and gilded lamps, each project not only introduces you to a new person and their crafty skills but also lets you get to know them through a family tradition. I really love this spin on DIY and think it’s so meaningful to hear the reasons why certain artists make the things they make. I, for one, loved hearing about Joy’s early aversion to the color gold (because of how often it’s used in her family’s native Thailand) and how a trip to Thailand in 1999 made her finally fall in love with it. I can’t imagine Joy not loving metallics, so it was fun to get that little tidbit about her earlier design tastes. Meg’s book is full of great stories like that, not to mention tips for turning your own family’s traditions into a project for your home".

I was delighted to be asked to shoot today with Julia Leach, former Creative Director for Kate Spade. She just launched her new line Chance. As she says " the striped t-shirt is the paper clip of personal style" and she would know. Her french inspired line of striped t-shirts makes me want one for every day of the week.

Amidst endless stripes in the warm sunday sunshine, the most creative folks in the bay area nibbled on brunch treats while sipping pomegranite lemonades. We spent the day photographing friends trying on Chance clothing, jewelry, hats and espradrilles at her first ever trunk show, right here in my home of San Francisco.

If you don't know Julia, you should. Hurry up and get one of her striped shirts, and I am bananas for the straw hat!

She is the new darling of twenty-ten in my book. With Chance... summer really is forever.

I have been on the move for quite a while now. Mostly Mexico, LA and NYC as most of you know. About to head off again to the chilly east coast for New Hampshire, Vermont then Idaho with the good folks from Apple, all boding well.

I have been thinking back over the years and the pictures and excited for 2010. To make images that capture what it is like to be on the road. The wind in your hair, the wind on your back. The sun as it streams across you in the morning, the deep inky black darkness of a foreign hotel room. The sun burning your nose as you drive into the mountains with the sunroof open. The crunch of snow beneath your feet. The exhaustion from non stop flights. The hunt for slow food in the middle of nowhere.

Road trip in Mexico. The mountains above Puerta Vallarta headed towards tequila. Dusk setting in, after cane fields burning, we stopped in some totally random town called Teuchitlan. It was Friday night and some religious holiday made it so only fish and shrimp was available. Uuuugh. Seeing that neither of us eat either we roamed the streets looking for food. Just when we were almost giving up and eating food from the local tienda... We ended up finding the one place serving pork tostadas. Check it.

Indian dancing

My friend Brooke hosted an amazing performance of classical indian dance at his fab glass and wood house in Montara tonight. It was utterly breathtaking. The music was mesmerizing and the dancing told stories as the bells jingles while she spinned around with grace. Thanks Brooke!

Yet another amazing shoot with Michelle for their Crazy 8 line. Our shoots are always a blast and between Miley Cyrus, cupcakes, dogs and hair blowing crazy from fans... It is always a crazy fun shoot. Look for them in stores nationwide this winter/spring.

At least we got to spend it outside in the beautiful Topanga Canyon. I love it there so much. The girls were troopers. I never get tired of pretty light screaming into my lens.

Day 5 of new Craft book with Meg Mateo Ilasco. Rope hand crocheted rugs, japanese curtains & gold leaf milk bottles. We spent yesterday at Lisa Congdon house who owns the amazing store Rare Device. She made a fabulous plate wall for us. Today we spent the day at Lisa Wong Jackson house who owns Good On Paper Design, their dog pixel and ever helpful husband Nick. 90* and the most amazing views! A few behind the scenes pics and vignettes from NYC, LA & SF shoots. Enjoy! More to come...two more days and 5 more crafters to go!

Summer in NYC

August in NYC. Everyone thinks I am crazy to show portfolios in the summer. Noone is in town and the heat off the pavement is blinding. I actually love going in the summer! Most people are available mid week and I love running in the afternoon showers along the Hudson. Cools you down from a long day of lugging 4 books around the city. Coffee with Robbie Lee, lunch with the Mcann crew, dinner with Nathan from Nathan Jenden Designs at the Soho House, The Frying Pan with Anthony Luscia from MSL and drinks with Suki Cheema at the new Cooper Square Hotel. Love the architecture. I miss summer nights already.

It seems I only get the chance to work with the Fabulous Charli around this time every year. We spent the day at Jasmine fabulous Eichler in the north bay. The holiday spread is going to be so fun this year! Yes, we actually did work this day. Enjoy.

San Francisco Street Food Festival

After a long bike ride and backyard chill session with Alison Hotchkiss from Alison Events our posse made the walk to the mission to get some grub. Sadly, so did everyone else. It was crazy! We waited in line forever, in the shortest line we could find, unaware of what food they were even serving. It was my first time eating beef hearts on a skewer, and honestly my last! It was a bit odd and mixed poorly with the only beer left in the beer garden, budweiser. We opted to bail even though the funnel cake shack was beckoning us. Maybe next year we go earlier!

Four days of acres of white & thousands of pictures we finally wrapped the big fat verizon shoot! 12 art directors 4 account execs, 4 art buyers, 2 stylists, 3 hair & makeup, 3 prop peeps, 6 wardrobe assistants, 2 camera assistants, one digital tech, one photo concierge & a DJ.
That's alot of "can you hear me now?"
